They are fired at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees (F), resulting in a hard surface. A protective glaze is applied before firing giving the tile added color and finish, making it resistant to stains, odors, bacteria, and scratches.

Porcelain tile is made with special clays to allow them to be fired at temperatures even higher than ceramic tile, typically exceeding 2,400 degrees (F). It is denser and harder than most other tile.
